Dr. Curtis Merriweather, Jr.
Dr. Curtis A. Merriweather, Jr. is a founder, senior executive, and practitioner-scholar with three decades of experience across the aerospace, defense, and government markets. The White House named him an entrepreneurial Game Changer in 2020, and he received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
He began his career in 1996 supporting Bechtel and Westinghouse at the Department of Energy in Aiken, South Carolina, while studying computer engineering at the University of South Carolina. He went on to serve the Department of Defense as a civilian program manager and systems engineer, earning his Systems Planning, Research, Development, and Engineering (SPRDE) Level III and Program Management Level II certifications from the Defense Acquisition University. He holds an MBA and a Master’s in Project Management from The Citadel.
In 2010, Curtis co-founded Emergent Inc., a defense and government technology firm that grew to more than $1 billion in cumulative federal contract award ceiling across Department of Defense and Intelligence Community customers. Today he is Managing Director and General Partner of Emergent Fund, and he serves on boards in the public and private sectors. His expertise includes capture management, corporate strategy, cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, information technology, and innovation management.
Curtis holds a PhD in Management from Case Western Reserve University, where his research examines cognition and decision-making when people use technology-enabled systems to do their work. He teaches management consulting at Clemson University and is an active researcher and reviewer for the Academy of Management and the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action. His book, Demystifying Government Contracting, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury Academic in March 2027.
He created the 8-Figure GovCon program to help small business owners understand how the federal marketplace really works and build businesses that can compete and grow in it.
